Blue Dragon is Open source

So by now we have all heard that BlueDragon is open source.  What do I think about this?  I think it’s good news, personally I will probably never look under the hood but if I needed to I can.  I have never used Blue Dragon as I have always had access to dedicated CF box's but now that it’s free I might pull and old server out of the cupboard and give it a go.

The thing that appeals to me is the free edition.  Any cheap hosting plan out there has php almost none have Cold Fusion and I don’t think I have ever seen it for free.  Now with a free cmfl engine I'd like to see more hosts offering this as part of their service.  If this happens we might start seeing some more community projects ie phpbb like forums and wordpress blogs for cmfl becoming more popular.  I currently use phpbb however I do little to no code customisation and that’s really because it’s already so good, but every now and then there are parts that we’d like to change and I would be more comfortable working with cfml.

I don’t see php/.Net devs throwing away what they know for cmfl but with a free edition out there I hope to see an increase in its use.  I also don’t see any big projects move from ColdFusion to Blue Dragon but there might be some that have a application that don’t need the extras and its now easier to sell a project that doesn’t have a server side technology that they have to fork out even more for.

If you want to read what I have been hearing being referred to as an idiotic, childish rant about this topic from an Adobe representative, check out Adam Lehman's post from this week:
http://www.adrocknaphobia.com/post.cfm/open-sounce...

I, on the other hand, think that this is really cool news. A relatively mature, accessible, free, open source, cross platform CFML processing engine? If you aren't an Adobe employee (or an Adobe fanboy to use one of Adam's frequent expressions), I am not sure how you wouldn't welcome this news. It has the potential to open CFML up to people that didn't have previous exposure, yet it won't take away the core enterprises customers that Adobe seems to focus all of its attention on. If small nickle and dime BD sites draw more attention to the language as a whole, I could even see Adobe welcoming this. Obviously Adam doesn't see it that way though!

If you have a question for Vince Bonfanti about the move to open source BD, he will be interviewed tonight for the CFWeekly. Per Matt Woodward:
"Final call for questions for Vince Bonfanti about the open source edition of BlueDragon! We're interviewing Vince at 9 pm eastern tonight to call your questions in to Skype user CFWeekly, or email podcast@coldfusionweekly.com!"
